PERCOLATED | DID YOU HEAR THE DRUMS

words by Alice
As part of Orientation Week 2016, students were given a brief to interpret Durban by being given words associated with Durban. So with Warwick Triangle and Bunny Chow being thrown into the mix, the students set off to collect visual prompts to come up with an idea to render onto their drums. While incorporating the recycling sign as the bins will be used for paper recycling on campus.

Together the students from DSSA and VEGA Durban made magic through the night.

Getting prepped to start....

Some words on the night by Matt Yelland a first year who stayed all night, what a champ!

The heated 2nd day for the 1st year Vega students and Design School students ended with an overnight team building exercise where students were to design and shape their own creative minds into a recycling bin concepts. Students were separated into groups of 8-10 people where they had to focus around a specific topic relating to Durban.
The night started with each group stealing away to their own bins where they decided upon their ideas after brainstorming. Then after that the true fun began. With paintbrushes, spray paint, pencils and any drawing material or assistance needed the students began working away at their rough marble slabs. Each section held its own DA Vinci hidden behind the mist of spray paint or the simple brush of paint. Some finished early, while others burned the midnight oil. However, this wasn’t the only activity, we won’t forget bouncing around the figure of 8 that each team had to go through in order to build our teamwork skills.
As the night grew most students finished and communicated with each other even helping others with their own projects, showing the true values and characteristics of being a student at Vega.

It's kiff bru.

Caught red handed!

A hands-on approach.

Placement is important.

The eye of the tiger.

An eye for detail.

Not only did the students work hard on their drums, but as paint must dry, the students competed in space hopper races to add to the experience of 'problem solving' aka 'how to creatively win' the race while wearing dresses and using children's hoppers.

Ready, steady, go!

To keep spirits high and in tune with what being a creative can entail, we had the help of the team from I Want My Coffee on campus to keep caffeine levels soaring.

With the help of the caffeine, we made it through the night and into the next day, looking slightly worse for wear and ready for a lie-down.

Congratulations to all the first years and their tireless mentors for an awesome night on campus.
